If you’ve been living under an urban culture rock, you may have discovered Teyana Taylor on the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on August 28, 2016. For the rest of us, we’ve watched this fellow New Yorker from Harlem become a Hip Hop socialite on our TV Super Sweet 16 on MTV (and now movie) screens for the past decade. Now the 26 year-old has been given the opportunity to bless the world with her Nubian beauty. If you felt a little tingle when you saw her, there are more than a few possible reasons why…
1. She makes you want to move.
Watching the video had me gyrating in my sofa, feeling quite energized. Teyana is a talented dancer, with moves I could never recreate. I’ll be damned if I wasn’t trying to copy them!
2. She is a mother.
This alone makes her worthy of celebration. Anyone who has been pregnant knows the changes a female body can go through during and after birth. It’s beautiful and encouraging to watch a fellow mom own her body and make it look so awesome.
3. She’s Unapologetic.
It’s no mistake that Kanye chose her for this video “Fade.” Teyana put a spin on the classic Flashdance vibe that brought the past into our future. Many of us aren’t even old enough to remember the original, but we damn sure won’t forget this one. Her body language oozed power, and she deserves all the respect.
4. She’s Real.
When I wasn’t in a visually drunken stupor, I was noticing the blurred ink work on her body. Regardless of her status (which is surely set to skyrocket now), Teyana is still a human, a fiancé and a parent. Some things still deserve to be left for mystery, and she clearly took this into consideration.
5. She Represents All Of Us.
Women, especially us Women of Color, were cheering her on feverishly through television and phone screens around the world. In that moment, Teyana represented the power we hold to captivate those who set their gaze upon us. We need to embrace this power. Own that shxt.
You may be thinking to yourself, “I don’t look like her – how can I own that sexiness?”
The answer is quite simple – it’s time find yours.
